Anatomy of… DJ Prince

I just stumbled across these. Some great videos on YouTube showing all the original samples from a load of dance classics. I knew quite a few of these sources already but there are loads here that I’ve never heard before. Check them out…

Eric B & Rakim – Paid In Full (Coldcut’s 7 Minutes Of Madness Mix)
Dee Lite – Groove Is In The Heart
Bomb The Bass – Beat Dis

There are loads more, check out DJ Prince’s channel on YouTube for the rest

René & Angela – I’ll be good

A tune that’s been sampled and re-recorded many times but nothing beats the original (I think this was the first one!). I expect a fair few people will recognise this but might not know the name – Foxy Brown & Jay-Z did a hip hop version in the late 90s which wasn’t far off this one, beats-wise.

A total 80s soul classic, I could dance to this stuff all night long. Love it

Awesome things: Alexander O’Neal’s fashion sense

Alexander is one of my favourite r&b/soul singers. The man can sing his heart out and has a super distinctive voice that always sounds totally wicked. In the 80s he was a big, big deal selling out arenas all over the shop and rightly so, his hits from back there were absolutely top.

He usually rocked the suave gentleman look while on stage: sharp suits done well but there are a few videos of him around where he is showing some amazing fashion sense off. I wish I looked as cool as him in these clips

The yellow suit

Saturday Love – what a tune. This yellow suit is seriously amazing, not many people could pull this off but Mr O’Neal makes it looks fresh. Shame about the crappy clip 🙁

Furry collared leather jacket, white scarf and argyle jumper

Innocent – another great tune but, wow, this outfit is off the hook. No wonder all the girls are all over him, this look is increds. I have to admit he doesn’t look as good towards the end when the jacket comes off to reveal a tank top underneath…should have kept it on, pal.

Totally badman tracksuit with white shirt

Saturday Love again, I honestly can’t explain how much I love this tune. Anyway, that’s not what we’re on about here. The fact that he’s crooning away wearing what appears to be a black & white tracksuit with a shirt underneath is brave. I don’t how but he looks so fucking cool in this.

Alex, I take my hat off to you…

ps just found out that he sang backing vocals on SOS Band – The Finest which makes him even more awesome

Stan Bush – The Touch

Awesome piece of 80s cheese straight out of the Transformers movie. Got to link to Mark Wahlberg’s amazing version of it in Boogie Nights – it’s a massively impressive performance, it must have been pretty tricky to get it to sound that bad. This tune also came out on a totally awesome picture disc that a friend was kind enough to give me for my birthday a couple of years back. Too cool for school

Teedra Moses – Just Wanna Be Your Girl

Little bit of R&B here. Always liked the keys in this tune and the background vocals in the chorus. Vids got some nice shots of New York in too. You gotta love a song where the singer admits to having a little fiddle downstairs – “sometimes I even touch myself” – TMI?
