Only something as horrific as this could be from up north. Every time I think I’ve seen a snack that is the unhealthiest thing in the world the Scots always come one better.
You may well have seen it by now but I love this blog I just found out about – Snacks and Shit – which is dedicated to recoding all the ridiculous stuff that Hip Hop MCs have said over the years and, trust me, there’s a lot of it. The categories they give each post are often as funny as the quotes themselves.
I stumbled across this the other day and thought I’d share. It’s an interview with a few key jungle DJs, producers and promoters from, I’m guessing, around late ’95 – DJ Rap, Darren Jay, Bryan Gee, Boymerang, L Double and Jarvis Sandy (Desert Storm Promotions) – discussing where the jungle/drum & bass scene was at the time and how the whole Jungle name was becoming synonymous with violence, drugs and general naughtiness
Worth a read to see what was going on 14 odd years ago and how things have changed
After seeing these guys rip the place to pieces at Bestival last weekend I had to post up one of their tunes.
The Ragga Twins worked with Shut Up & Dance in the early nineties and created some classic tunes. Beats by SUAD who, for my mind, were one of a handful of true pioneers in the hardcore/rave scene and really haven’t received the praise they deservce and lyrics by Deman and Flinty they came out with a classic album, Reggae Owes Me Money, that anyone who likes a bit of ragga, breakbeat, hardcore, hip hop or anything remotely similar should definitely check out.
Here’s Wipe The Needle which actually doesn’t have too much of the Twins on it but still an incredible piece of hardcore history. They really don’t make ’em like they used to.
For a bit more of the guys’ work you can check the recent(ish) Soul Jazz compilation of some of their best tracks on Spotify – spotify:album:45H2BfEFikrbu3NoCl6zJa . You can also buy if direct from the label here – http://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/releases/?id=12379
Now defunct Clor called it a day after their debut album came out. Bit of a shame, really, as I thought it was pretty good! Fun, poppy stuff here with the right mix of guitars and electronic elements coupled with some nice melodies to keep the whole bouncing along rather nicely. Pretty sure they’re from Brixton as well, always nice to know that they’re local!
