You probably know a load of tunes by these guys, they had several massive hits in the 80s although I was never so much a fan of the later ones (Shout, Sowing the Seeds etc.). Their first album, The Hurting, contains some killer tracks and is one of those rare pop records that’s actually worth a listen all the way through rather than heading straight for the singles. As well as Mad World, and the awesome Pale Shelter there are a few other wicked tracks on there including this one…

The Prodigy – Full Throttle

I pulled Music For The Jilted Generation out of the shelves recently after realising it had been years since last giving it a play. To me Experience sounds a little dated now, even though it does contain some complete classics, but Liam’s second album has stood the test of time surprisingly well, if you ask me.

It sits pretty nicely somewhere between their hardcore beginnings and the rock/dance crossover act that they’d eventually become. I kinda lost interest when Keith and Maxim stopped just doing the running man and started getting on the mic but obviously lots of people didn’t agree with me as they’re still going strong and headlining festivals the world over.

The singles on the album massively overshadowed everything else and made me super bored of hearing them ever again but there are some total gems there. This one shows that there was a bit of hardcore still alive in the Prodigy sound and the last three tracks on the record are pure gold, especially Skylined. The whole things brings back memories of seeing them at Brixton Academy in ’95 or so dancing about with my curtains flying all over the place. Good times.

I can’t claim to know the Nu Groove catalogue inside out but most of the stuff I’ve heard on there has been absolutely wicked. I didn’t realise that these guys were responsible for so many of the releases on the label. There are plenty in here that I’d heard already but def a few more that I need to check out. A wicked little mix of house music for you anyway. Enjoy!

Yuck – The Wall

These guys released their debut album last year and I’d highly recommend anyone into lo-fi indie checks it out. I’m assuming there have been many comparisons to bands like Dinosaur Jr, who they definitely sound a lot like, but there are some great songs on the album that make them a step above bands giving a nod to a classic era of guitar music.

Something a bit more rocking for you today. Budgie were a big influence on many of the early heavy metal acts and have also often been cited as a favourite of many seminal thrash metallers over the years (Metallica, Megadeth etc). This tune is one of those that I must have picked up from some distant listen years back but had no idea who it was by. Absolutely wicked stuff from a very underrated band…

This gig must have taken place a month or so after the legendary club had opened. For anyone with even a passing interest in the Hacienda, Factory Records or New Order/Joy Division I’d recommend reading Peter Hook’s “The Haçienda: How Not to Run a Club”. Anyway, great tunes from a great band…
