ABC – Many Happy Returns

Poison Arrow and Look of Love may well be staples of the 80s disco but have any of you actually listened to anything else ABC did? If no, then you’ve missed out. Lexicon of Love is a great album full of catchy motifs and funky-ass basslines. Martin Fry’s vocal style and delivery is always on point and it’s nice to find a band that had huge singles success but could actually back it up with a decent album (or two).

Locked Groove – Aquarius

More in the way of tasty house. This from another fav of mine, Locked Groove. One gripe, though. Much as I love vinyl I wish these guys wouldn’t just put this stuff out on vinyl only. Locked Groove’s wicked hardcore-esque Shirts Off was the same. How’s a man supposed to buy it if there’s no digital release? There is no room for more records in my house!

Hackman – Lost From Me

Hackman’s top, isn’t he? If you’ve not heard this talented young chap before then you’re missing out. His latest release for Futureboogie is a lovely piece of blissed out house music. This is my pick of the bunch, but they’re all good. Buy it.

DJ Contakt – Pool Bar Reminiscence Mix

Here’s a little mix my pal Wayne AKA DJ Contakt did. He used to run a night at the Pool Bar in Shoreditch that I used to go to many years back and would play all sorts of wicked hip hop down there. Here’s a mix of tunes he did as a little retrospective of the night.

Krush – House Arrest

I was reminded of this tune after watching the documentary The Beat Is The Law which is all about Sheffield and its contribution to the independent music history of the UK. Slightly weirdly the DVD is branded as a film about the band Pulp although it covered a far wider (and perhaps more interesting) collection of producers and bands.

One of the key people interviewed is Robert Gordon who produced this track, had a huge part to play in the UK electronic music scene and comes across as a pretty nice chap. I’d highly recommend giving the doc a spin, it’s great (as is this tune).
