Manix – Riprize

Manix AKA Marc Mac from 4 Hero released a hardcore album, Living in the Past, the other day. You can grab it on MP3 but the vinyl editions are all gone now including a very lovely looking picture disc which I was lucky enough to grab a copy of…but only just!

The album’s great. 10 tracks of hardcore mastery done as a faithful recreation of the sounds that these guys were putting out back in ’92 and ’93. It doesn’t stray far from the original formula, which is absolutely fine by me considering Manix and the Reinforced lot released some of the finest tunes from this period. Is the album better than the classics of yesteryear? Sadly not, but it’s an excellent recreation of the golden years of hardcore and deserves a spot in everyone’s collection.

Grace Jones – I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect For You)

Aside from the well known tunes I’ve never delved too far into the Grace Jones back catalogue which I’m now regretting after hearing this slice of electronic 80s awesomeness. As suspected I just looked it up and it was produced by the one and only Nile Rodgers, a man responsible for more amazing beats than, well, anyone. Even though many people know lots of his tunes he actually doesn’t get the respect he deserves. Maybe I’ll do a few posts in the future of more underground songs he’s produced or ones that people might not be aware of.

Chaka Khan – I Know You, I Live You

Chaka Khan is amazing, she’s recorded so many great tunes yet somehow this is a fairly recent revelation to me. Everyone knows the hits so I hope I don’t need to educate anyone there and of course you all get down to I Feel For You when it goes the jukebox but have any of you actually listened to the album it’s from in full? No? Then do so immediately, there are some killers on there!

Anyway, this is one from 1981 and has a chorus that I can never get out of my head. What a riddim.

People Under The Stairs – Chicken Kebap

This appears towards the end of the People Under The Stairs’ Carried Away album. Haha, youwot?

New York Transit Authority – Hard Work

I’ve heard Redlight playing this on Rinse a few times and just found out what it is. Conveniently it’s out today so I’ll be picking up a copy and you should too. Simple stuff but that rolling one-note bassline is class. It is worth noting that New York Transit Authority is from Bristol and not New York. Liar.
