When wrestling was good: Ted DiBiase
Saturday, September 19th, 2009
The WWE is still kinda fun to watch but every time I see it it just reminds me of quite how wicked this stuff was in the ’80s and ’90s. A time when ridiculous stereotypes and shocking lycra outfits ruled the day and there was still a massive element of fun involved. The wrestling’s never been about the actual in ring bit for me, just the promos where big fellas who couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag shout a lot and say some of the most mind numbing crap I’ve ever heard.
My favourite wrestler was definitely Ted DiBiase, the Million Dollar Man. He kinda looks like a cross between British singer Chris Rea and a Lion and like many at the time he doesn’t share the steroid enhanced physique that pretty much every wrestler has now.
His promos were so good…classic stuff here. The shot at 0:39 cracks me up every time.
Looking back, it’s unbelievable that they gave this guy a slave, Virgil, who happened to be a black fella. Goes to show what you could get away with in more naive times!

Ted goes to hospital promo (what is Virgil wearing at 1:14?!)
I want this belt
And remember, everybody has a price for the Million Dollar Man…
