I love old crappy music videos. In fact, crappy’s not the word. These vids are great just, at times, a little misguided, at others baffling and often reveal things about the artists that I’m surprised people didn’t pick up on when they first came out.
First up in what I hope will be a regular series of posts if I can find the time to do them is a little dissection of some of my favs
Ratt – Round & Round
There’s not much I can say about this one, it’s amazing. An absolutely top tune with a video to match. Don’t really know what’s going on but it invovles a load of people dressed up having some dinner and Ratt looking totally awesome in a loft.
Finest moments
0:30 – Early high kicking action (there’s much more to come)
1:05 – Status Quo style syncopation needs slightly more practice from the axemen
2:09 – high kick straight into weird axe formation which looks like a big bunch of wobbling perms. Class
2:23 – They’re acting like this was a bad thing to have happened. Metal guitarist falling through the ceiling at my dinner party would make the night
You should probably watch this one in high quality on YouTube, it’s worth it
Another Ratt video, another party. Awesome song and a little beyond generic vid. I’m pretty sure that this tune came out on a wicked rat shaped 7″ picture disc which, sadly, I have yet to win on eBay.
Finest moments
0:42 – I’m guessing this is what God would look like with a perm?
0:58 – I don’t care what anyone says – that look is damn HOT!
1:40 – This just creeps me out a little
2:50 – When drummers attack
Ratt – Back For More
Not as great a tune but the vid makes up for it. Big stuff
Finest moments
1:02 – How could any woman resist this? Playa for real
2:00 – Man from Del Monte gets shown up by ugly, skinny rockers. Love it
3:31 – Least convincing bike stunt ever. Spare no expense, lads
I guess I could do these posts for years, especially seeing as we have thousands of them posted over at the rolldabeats sample forum but I might try to do a few more non-dnb/jungle/hardcore ones here when I come across them
Massive one here, anyway.
Everyone who has ever heard a jungle tune (or watched Father Ted ;] ) should know this one
This popped up randomly in my life the other day…what a blast from the past!
Back to 1987 with this one, can’t believe I was 9 at the time and still remember it well. Perhaps it’s another of those tunes that appears on Heart or Magic FM on the drunken cab journeys home.
I stumbled oncorazonazultw’s awesome Quiet Storm mix on YouTube a while back and have had it on the iPod for ages now. I just checked the rest of his videos the other day and they’re killing me, some great mixes with videos all added on top of some really top 80s tunes, loads that I haven’t heard for years and had totally forgotten about.
Great to see more people not playing the same old crap and making a proper go of mixing it up.
Come and join me for this awesome night. Been down there many, many times and it’s always totally wicked
==============================================
Insession kicks off its summer programme on Saturday the 16th May by inviting three of our favourite patrons to get behind the decks for another alternative throwdown.
1xtra’s premier dnb host Bailey will be joining us as he’s a long overdue guest and knows exactly what we expect down at the sessions.
He’s a multi award winning radio presenter as well as long standing resident DJ for Goldie’s Metalheadz outfit and Fabio’s night Swerve.
Bailey’s true passion lies with being the best selector possible and we’ve no doubt that’ll apply to his styles outside dnb.
Another session regular, Zero T, has agreed to come back and refresh our minds with his varied influences. Zero T is arguably the brightest rising star out of Dublin’s dnb scene and his influences range from the early 90s conscious hip-hop sounds of Pete Rock, Premier and ATCQ to UK trip hop artists and labels such as Mowax, Ninja Tune and Massive Attack. Add to that a great knowledge of 70s soul, funk and blue note jazz and you can imagine why we’re looking forward to his return.
Finally Mr Haste will be getting involved, bringing evidence to the table of his serious vinyl addiction and unhealthy knowledge of archiving records. We’re not sure exactly what to expect from Tom but do know he’s collected most styles known to man and is never afraid to play them!
Also don’t forget to catch Valve recordings Craggz who will be road testing his new house productions and Bensamba who will be dropping more trademark brasilian broken beats for the early starters..
