Rogue Unit – Dance Of The Saroes (Nookie Remix)

Another one on the jungle tip inspired by an incredible thread over at Dogs On Acid (a place that I visit less and less frequently nowadays). Hours of amazing atmospheric/melodic jungle & dnb to listen to in there with some really great links.

Here’s a fav of mine from the wicked Labello Blanco, a label that went from early hardcore up through to jungle and dnb often releasing a pretty good variety of styles along the way. There are a few stinkers in there but many classics.

This one is a remix from Nookie of a track originally by Rogue Unit, AKA Steve Gurley, a man who has covered so many different genres in dance music and layed down countless classic is a bit of classic jungle. Steve, along with producers like Pete Parsons, is a completely unsung hero of early UK dance music and should really have his contribution recognised.

Big Vern & Bushman – Digital Maximum

Kinda susprised to find this on YouTube but, since it’s up there, I’ll share it here

A pretty obscure track tucked away on the b-side of a rare release from 93/94. Rougher Than A Lion on the same 12″ is also well worth a listen. Definitely a 12″ worth picking up. I just the sounds and bass that come in at around 1:30 – it’s def a bit of a weird tune but I kinda dig it!

Thumbzo – Niceness – 95-96 Mellow Drum and Bass Mix

A dreamy mix here from top man Thumbzo, one of the winners of the recent RollDaBeats DJ competition and totally top bloke, on a mellow dnb vibe. Starting off with an absolute classic – Intense’s Sax Lick – and rolling through a whole host of lovely tunes. Get listening…

You can find a load of other mixes across a load of different styles from the man here too

Skool Of Hard Knocks – The Bommer

Totally ruffneck jungle tune from Skool Of Hard Knocks – the guy best know the wicked Kan Ya Feel It. Nice long intro into the Cutty Ranks – The Bomber sample and then in with the heavyweight bassline. Not such a well known track but one that kills it in any jungle set.

J Rolla’s Big Happy Mix

I’ve been buying way too much Happy Hardcore recently. Before you think less of me I’m not talking about the horrible BOOM BOOM BOOM stuff that you’d generally associate with the HHC label. Many people don’t seem to know this but before ’96 Happy was actually pretty good if you could stand a little cheese. Less four to the floor and more amens and breakbeats with the odd piano here and there.

J Rolla, a wicked DJ who you should all go check out when you have the chance, posted this mis up on DNBA forums a little while back and I’ve had this on heavy rotation ever since. It absolutely sums up the good side of Happy Hardcore leaving out all the shite and, boy, there’s a lot of it
